Monica Beeder

Dr. Monica Beeder is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Economics at the University of Southampton. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Norwegian School of Economics, where she was affiliated with FAIR, the Chr. Michelsen Institute, and the Development Learning Lab.

Dr. Beeder’s research lies at the intersection of development economics, conflict economics, the economics of crime, and exploitation. Her work examines how illicit markets, ethnic identity, and security interventions shape economic and social outcomes. Current projects focus on cocaine production and violence in Colombia, ethnic identity and discrimination in Ethiopia, the effects of military drone use on civilian attitudes and radicalization in African contexts, and economic exploitation across institutional and labor-market settings.

She is currently working with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law and the research group Behavioral Economics of Crime and Conflict as part of a research collaboration on exploitation, with projects spanning Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
